Rannoch Moor

Blackrock Cottage

02 Nov 2018 - 04 Nov 2018

Some early winter colds and a rubbish weather forecast cut a swathe through the initial enthusiasm for this meet, but a "full house" was still achieved.

Myself, Janet, Rhona, Maggie, Alan Dow and Jim Plaice met at the Green Welly about 3.30 on Friday. We then went on to open up the cottage in daylight and dry weather. Once we had negotiated the various chains and padlocks we had a pleasant surprise. the coal shed has now been converted in to a very stylish shower block, drying room and toilet very Grand Designs. Iain Dow arrived shortly afterwards followed by Angus Morrison one of our Meetup finds.

More in hope than anticipation plans were laid for the following day.

Saturday (it was wet, very wet)

Iain went and explored Invermallie Bothy on the south side of Loch Arkaig.

Rhona and Maggie set off to walk the West Highland Way down to Bridge of Orchy, but hit a snag in discovering that Rhona's waterproofs were no longer waterproof, they beat a soggy retreat to
the Ski Centre Café.

Alan, Janet and Jim P set off to do Ben Hiant on Saturday but decided to park it for another day. They stopped off at the viewpoint Camas Nan Geall which looks down on a Bronze age standing stone and Neolithic chambered cairn and other ancient monuments. On the way back they stopped at the Hide at Ardery and managed to catch an otter feeding.

Angus headed for Glen Nevis intent on some photography.

I decided to check out some dive sites at Ballachullich and Loch Creran, didn't see any otters but did see lots of divers and wild swimmers, clearly rain didn't bother these guys.

The cottage though provided a cosy retreat, and a very sociable evening was spent their with Katie, Jonathan and Jim Whitehead joining us.

Sunday (much better day)

Iain went into Glen Etive and did Stob Coir'an Albannaich and Meall nan Eun.

Jim P, Alan and Janet did Sgor na h-Ulaidh, parking just past the Clachaig turnoff.

Jim W, Katy and Jonathan had a great day out in the hidden Valley lots of stags roaring on the hill and great views over to loch Etive from the top.

Maggie, Rhona, Myself and Angus headed home early.

All in all a good meet in a great location despite the wet Saturday.
