Lairg - Crask Inn bunkhouse
03 Aug 2018 - 05 Aug 2018
The meet in August was Lairg in Sutherland but with no coordinator I volunteered to post what the team got up to.
All 7 had pre booked to stay at Dunroaming Caravan Site before the venue change to Pondside and found Alan, Lindsay, Vania, Jim and Janet in a static caravan joined by Trish and Richard in the 'Happy Van'.
On Saturday Trish and Richard headed South to tackle the Corbett Carn Chuinneag just to the north of Ben Wyvis and had a successful day with a little smir of rain.
Lindsay, Jim and Janet went for Ben Klibreck going via Cnoc Sgrodain and A'Chioch. With low cloud there was no view from the summit and a lot of strong wind but the views opened up on the descent so they took in Creag an Lochain to extend the day a little.
Alan and Vania had an adventurous day Corbett bashing. They went for Cranstackie followed by Beinn Spionnaidh. Having the worst of the weather in the far north they had poor visibility making navigation difficult and got a total drenching. Comparisons were made to Ben Starav's north west ridge as a slightly dodgy route was taken (no surprise!) encountering large very loose boulders. Copious quantities of gin and wine were required back at the caravan to stop them seizing up completely.
Vania headed for home on Sunday to try to dry out her gear and Alan (wet gear festering in the van) had a day pottering around after declining the offer to join Lindsay, Jim and Janet on Ben Hope.
Trish and Richard had a coffee with Alan and then had a civilised day touring north to John O'Groats.
Lindsay, Jim and Janet had a dry day but again a cloud base below the summit prevented the extensive views hoped for. They had a wee stop off at the Broch Dun Dornaigil on the way back.
Jim headed home and Alan, Lindsay and Janet went to visit the Bird Hide at Dalchork and only saw a rainbow before hitting the road for home.
Hope to see you at Lochranza in Arran for the September meet!
